FOUR PESOS
It had rained every day for
two weeks and my lifeguard tan was faded and beige. The guy on lifeguard tower 2 was my best
friend, Johnny. His dad was a captain
for eastern airlines and told us he would get us on his flight to San Juan on friday
and put us both up at the La Concha for the weekend… and also get our
surfboards on the plane. Johnny’s dad
said it was always sunny in Puerto Rico and he also agreed to get two of our
friends on board with their surfboards.
We picked up our paychecks and headed to the airport. We planned to stay in Puerto Rico for a while
and surf and we would figure out where to stay after the free weekend and a way
to earn some money after we got there.
It was 1969 and a little bit
of money seemed to go a long way.
Especially when all you really needed was money for beer and
surfwax. The La Concha was beautiful and
our "free" room was perfect. The four of
us in one room was fine and we were used to sleeping on the beach, in a car, or
on the floor. So four in one room was not a problem. We took our U.S. dollars from our paychecks
and changed the dollars into Puerto Rican money.
