Twelve year old Nick and ten year old Emma were told to watch their baby sister, Fannie. Fannie got into everything and was everyone's favorite. She crawled into the kitchen while Nick and Emma were outside for just a minute. Fannie opened the cabinet under the sink and ate lye. Fannie did not die but was horribly burned inside...and never the same again. My Uncle Nick and Aunt Emma never married and never left Fannie's side again for the rest of their lives. They never talked to me about how horrible they felt that day they were supposed to be watching Fannie. But you can see it in their faces and it is a credit to both of them that they took such good care of Fannie for so many years...
